Celebrating A New Gay Paranormal From Bestseller Carolina Valdez

Today we're celebrating a new Amber Allure release for bestselling author Carolina Valdez.

Carolina warns not to be fooled by the photo. "Even if you walk most of the race, you want to be sure to break into a run for the camera." Although most of her running days have morphed into walking days, she's completed over a hundred distance races - six of them marathons. Her short story about a murder on the streets she's actually competed on, in the Los Angeles Marathon, appears in a Sisters in Crime/Los Angeles anthology.

After a varied career as a registered nurse while winning awards and making sales writing freelance, she decided to retire to finish her first novel. Now she writes about searing passions and the sweetly explosive ecstasies of love.

INHABITING THE NIGHT by Carolina Valdez

LAPD Detective Trent Edwards rents a house in a mountain community near the only reported sighting of his brother, who's disappeared without a trace. Martin Longhouse, who owns the local fitness center, takes Trent under his wing and introduces him to townspeople who might have seen his missing sibling. Soon, the lust that flares between the two men settles into something deeper.

But Trent doesn't know Martin has a secret, nor does he know exactly who lives in Little Grizzly Lake. Or who, and what, inhabits the woods at night.

When the secrets unravel, Trent discovers his rational cop's mind has a choice - let go of his love for Martin, or open himself up to other realities, other possibilities for his life...

  3. Good morning, DeNita and Anne! So far, this novella isn't part of a series, although my editor and at least one fan have asked me to continue the story of those who live in Little Grizzly Lake. I'm thinking about that.

I'd written a novella with shifter elements, but now I decided my hero should be a shifter. In TWILIGHT that time of day heralds the shift. In INHABITING THE NIGHT the shift begins at night, so it seemed natural to put the two together in a trade paperback. WHITE SHADOWS IN DARKNESS is scheduled for release from Amber Quill Press's Allure line toward the end of November.

  5. Hello, April. You love reading m/m romance, and I enjoy writing it. I also love cats! We don't have one any more because we're away from home a lot and boarding was never satisfactory...from the cat's or our point of view.

  6. Oh I put my vote in for a Little Grizzle Lake Series - just think you can put a little bit of everything in that town - shifters, vamps, demons, fae - anywhere your muse takes you!

  7. So now I have three votes for a series! Guess I'll have to think harder, won't I?

Same thing happened with me when NIGHT TRAIN TO NAPLES was released. My editor and men--yes, men--asked for a sequel. I just handed in NIGHT TRAIN TO NEW ORLEANS. It's on the schedule for release 1/16.

    Thanks for the encouragement,
    Carolina

  10. Congratulations on your new release! The excerpt left me (and Trent) wanting more: can't wait. Did you just write SEQUEL to Night Train's on its way? Great! I've been hoping there'd be more to their story.

  11. Carolina,

I came over to your blog when I read you had only one entrant. I know how hard that is on your psyche, so I came to say hi.

  12. Thanks for all the comments! If you've read TWILIGHT or seen its cover, you'll know I love both domestic and big cats. In that story, Cade shifts into the body of a snow leopard. They're such uniquely beautiful animals. And the white tiger? I'm not surprised Judy was first drawn to it on this current cover.

Research revealed that white tigers are not albinos. Their genes determine their color.

And thanks, Dyanne, for coming over when only Anne had popped in. I enjoy visiting with readers and other authors, so that's what's disappointing with lower turnouts.

  13. I love the tiger on the cover! Big cats are always the first place I visit when I go to the zoo. There's just something so majestic about them. Congrats on your new release!

  14. Hello!

What is your opinion on book trailers? Do you think they help in book sales?

    Thanks,

  16. For booklover0226 re effectiveness of book trailers for sales.

That's a good question! I suspect an amateurish one might squelch sales, so when they first became popular I checked out professional fees and they ran $250-400. That's beyond my pocketbook.

So I haven't used one. I enjoy watching them, but I'm not sure anyone can tell you if they're worth the time or expense. I have a friend who does her own and says they're very time consuming. She does them because she likes doing them. However, she didn't write for about two years and designed them during this quiet period. Her publisher, Amber Quill Press, tracked her sales. Once there was no increase, another time there was.

I heard an Avon editor who was asked this question, say, "Write your next book." In other words, don't take writing time off to do a trailer. The book is more important. However, Avon does use trailers.

Sorry I can't be defnitive on the subject. Hope that helps a little.

  18. Carolina: The new book sounds great and the cover is gorgeous. I have 2 cats, boys and one is an albino and he is huge for a house cat.

It's great that you participate in all those marathons...so cool...and even if you are walking them you are one up on alot of us who couldn't even manage that. *grin*

Thanks for the info and the chance at great prize(s).

  19. I love the m/m genre and am excited by the paranormal aspect of this book. It's got great sounding suspense and these two men seem smokin' hot together. I'd love to see more of them. Congratulations on its release!

  20. I have always wanted to participate in one of those walkathons... I will remember the picture advice! LOL
Anyway, the book sounds great. (It's the secret formula for me, you know: gay shifters + romance = book Ashley must read.

  22. Comment for Kate--

As I was winding up NIGHT TRAIN TO NAPLES, I was keenly aware the love story of vampire Alexandros Nicolaides and the Italian human Dante Rocco was unfinished. And then there was Giacomo, out there somewhere in the wind.

I started the sequel even before telling my editor, E.J. Gilmer, or hearing the comments from the men. It was clear there had to be a second story. Now I'm wondering if there should be a third. Perhaps featuring Alex's New Orleans co-worker? I'm thinking it over.

Right now I'm working on an unrequited love story between two former high school lovers now grown up, and one is a rock star, the other his tour manager. I wanted to set it in the fells of the Lake District where Beatrix Potter worked to save Herdwick sheep. Then Christiane France, a Canadian Amber Quill Press author raised in Great Britain, told me what boring country that was! So, now my characters are in Oregon. In sheep growing territory. And there are Herdwick sheep there.

It's nice to have friends. And the Internet.

    Beautiful cats, Joey and Joder.
