STEAMROLLED by Pauline Baird Jones

With all of time at risk, it's a bad time to fall in love...unless it's the only time...

Robert Clementyne is going on a transmogrification machine hunt. He fears finding the machine will be as difficult as pronouncing the name. How can the steam-powered device perform as advertised, and how useful can any information be, coming from a steampunk themed bowling alley/museum?

It's pretty crazy, but he's been there, done that, and thinks he can handle it. And then he meets the proprietor/curator...Emily Babcock.

Emily grew up in crazy, still lives in it - hey, it's her freaking zip code. So no worries when Robert and his team walk into her bowling alley. The first visitors ever to her museum.

But neither of them is prepared for what happens when they open the door to the past...and the future. With a side trip through Roswell...and a face-to-face meeting with an evil genius/wannabe - who is on his way to becoming evil overlord-of-everything...

  2. Many thanks for the party, DeNita! I am glad you love Emily. I had such fun writing her!

STEAMROLLED picks up a few months after TANGLED IN TIME. Robert, Doc's brother, is trying to track down the transmogrification machine (grin). He doesn't actually expect to find it, but that wouldn't be any fun, now would it? (grin)

This book is what they call a "mash up." It's a mix of science fiction romance with steampunk elements. Steampunk is about mixing anachronistic technology with Victorian type steam engines and often includes automatons and airships. I give this a bit of a twist in STEAMROLLED. Or possibly a big twist. (grin)

Anyway, it is a pretty wild ride, but I hope one that readers will enjoy. :-)
    Thanks for having me!

  5. I haven't read a Steampunk novel yet but I'm open to it. I like all types of books so I'm sure I can get into this type as well. Seems like it would be fun to read.

Congratulations on the new release. What made you decide to write Steam Punk?

  7. Thanks for coming by, Mary! What decided me to try steampunk? Well, I read a fun novel called Soulless by Gail Carriger and thought, that was fun. I needed to write a short story for an anthology and I thought it would be fun to write a steampunk character meeting one of my series characters. I started writing and the story got longer and longer until it was a novella and too long for the anthology. It's called TANGLED IN TIME and sort of precedes STEAMROLLED. It sets up the "meet" with the transmogrification machine. lol

I pick the story up, with new lead characters and start mashing my steampunk into SFR right away. lol!

  9. I'm just making forays into the steampunk genre, but really loving it so far. The new book sounds very intriguing and I have to ask...Is it a stand-alone or could this stretch out into a series?

  11. Hi Pauline :)
Congrats on the release of "Steamrolled"
I LOVED "Tangled In Time" and can't wait to read Robert and Emily's story.
What made you decide to add zombies & bugs to the story? Are there going to be follow-ups (Where is that transmogrification machine going next )

    Mindy :)

  13. @ Joder - many thanks for stopping by. STEAMROLLED is actually the fourth book in a connected series (i.e. the plots are connected, but different main characters in each). TANGLED IN TIME, the last book, is also a steampunk/sfr mashup, but the others are sfr. And yes, there will be another book and I think the transmog machine will make at least one more appearance. I mean, its just so fun! (grin)

  14. @ Danielle - many thanks for stopping by! the steampunk genre is really forming and reforming. Lots of different stuff. some very period and some, like mine, taking it and twisting it a big.

@ MIndy - I'm so glad you enjoyed it! It was very fun to write Robert and Emily's story. I'm afraid the Zombies came because my son introduced me to Plants vs Zombies, so you have to blame him. I will say, my zombies are atypical. LOL!

Funny story, ever since my hubby read THE KEY, he always asks me, did she kill her husband? So, for the hubby, I am stating that NO husbands were killed in the writing of STEAMROLLED. (grin)

  15. @ Jacqueline - thank you so much! I will admit, I am enjoying the cover. LOL! And it is totally my fault for putting Em in a corset. (grin)

  16. Congratulations on your new release Pauline!

It sounds as if this book is tied to your other book "Out of Time" - were you planning to have the two books tied together or did it just turn out that way? Was this plotted or did you "pants" this?

  17. Ok, curious: What the heck is a transmogrification machine - I know, I know, read the book :)

  18. Hi, Maria, many thanks! Actually STEAMROLLED isn't tied to OUT OF TIME, though I have thought of bringing them into this story line, since it is about time travel. Let's just say, I haven't ruled them showing up in one of the books at some point.

  19. @ Sheri - LOLOL! I have a picture on my website, but it doesn't help much.

  20. Congratulations on your new release. What made you decide to write steam punk? Is it easier or harder to write than other genres?

  21. Congrats on the new release, Pauline. I'm still new to steampunk. I've only read one steampunk book, but look forward to reading "Steamrolled."

  22. @ Sherry - Many thanks! As to your question, I think I just got curious, wondering if I could do it and link it to my current series. A lot of people told me that the mash up of genres might be a mess, but they all seem happy with it. I think my editor put it this way, "It's totally over the top, but you make it seem so reasonable." LOL!

@! Jane - thanks! What steampunk book did you read? I've got several on my TBR, but needed to get mine done before diving in. :-)

  25. Many thanks Sarah and MaryBelle! Sorry the chocolate is only virtual, but help your self. (grin)

To answer your question, there is one plot line left a bit open from STEAMROLLED, so that is what I'm mulling at the moment. I also turned in a short story called STEAM TIME for my publishers steampunk anthology. It also resolves a mini character from the story and was a lot of fun to write. :-)

  26. P.S. marybelle - I hope you enjoy it! I had a great time writing it! :-)

  27. I am really getting interested in Steampunk. It is a bit unique. What triggered your interest?
    debby236 at gmail dot com

  28. If you think about it, Debby, steampunk has been around a long time. Jules Verne, HG Wells, we just call it something different now. What interested me? I think it is the sense of humor and whimsy possible. Others have taken it darker, but I wanted to go in the other direction. :-)

    Love your humor.
