Today on our Cyber Launch Party Blog, we're celebrating Wendi Zwaduk's new Clandestine Classic retelling of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
One man pledges to own her, while another wants her heart. The Opera sets the stage for romance and intrigue. In the catacombs below the building lives a man rife with sorrow and passion. The Phantom. But he’s not content to live alone. He wants to possess the one woman who can set him free.
His Christine.
Viscount Raoul de Chagny doesn’t believe the rumours of a Ghost living below the Opera. He only has eyes for Christine, his childhood friend and first love. Together they embark on a sensual journey of discovery and fiery desire.
But she can only have one man. Will love raise her up or tear their world apart?

How was it adding your writing touch to a "classic"? What were some of the challenges?

It was hard only because Leroux has a certain voice to his characters and I had to stick to it. But it was fun because I could let the characters run loose in the bedroom, or backstage, or on the roof!
DeleteHello Wendi and super congrats on the new release!
ReplyDeleteGreat question Susan - I'd love to know what went into your retelling of Phantom (and btw, who didn't even want to do that! Lucky!!)
How many times did you read the orginial and how difficult did you find it to write in Gaston Leroux's voice?
I wish you great success with your new book and hope it's a huge bestseller for you!
Enjoy your day today and have fun!
Staying in his writing voice was the hardest. The second hardest thing was figuring out what undergarments were worn during the time period of the story. I had no idea they wore so much!!
DeleteI must have read the original about 15 times before I really felt i had a grasp of it. And even then, it was still slower going. I really wanted to wind the sex into the story, not just plunk it in. :-)
Congrats on the newest release. Look forward to reading this one. Now that you have completed the retelling of this classic, is there any other ones you would like to do?

I'd love to tackle Dracula. I think that one would be a blast. Let him get into the details of what he does to seduce. Hee hee. Thanks for stopping by!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the book! It sounds good. Have you seen the Broadway show?

I'd love to get to see the Broadway show. DH and BIL saw it and loved it. Sigh. One of these days... :-)
DeleteOh I love the Phantom and loved the excerpt! Please tell me you let the Phantom have some fun too!
ReplyDeleteI can only say it sticks to the original text as closely as possible. :-) Yes, I"m a tease.
DeleteWhat do you think could be a potential Clandestine Classic 100 years from now?

Good question. I'm not sure. Hm... wandering off to think about it..
