Celebrating A New Release In Shirley Tallman's Sarah Woolson Mystery Series

Today we're celebrating the long-awaited release of SCANDAL ON RINCON HILL - Book four in Shirley Tallman's Sarah Woolson Mystery Series.

Even as a small child, Shirley Tallman, dreamed of being a writer. Now, this multi published, award-winning author dreams of having more time to write!

Shirley, who has ten contemporary romances published under the pseudonym Erin Ross and several television and movie scripts sold and in production with her screenwriting partner Nancy Hersage, is currently hard at work on her new historical mystery series for St. Martin's Press.

The Sarah Woolson Mysteries, which started with MURDER ON NOB HILL, have all the charm of a nineteenth-century Legally Blonde and have earned Shirley a good deal of acclaim. The second book in the series, THE RUSSIAN HILL MURDERS, sold out its first hardcover printing in just seven weeks and the third book, THE CLIFF HOUSE STRANGLER, was chosen as a July 2007 selection by The Mystery Guild Book Club. The fourth book SCANDAL ON RINCON HILL hits the bookshelves today!

Engaged in a life or death struggle to find the murderer, Sarah becomes embroiled in the erotic escapades of the town's infamous high-end brothels, a proper Anglican church, Darwin's shocking theory of evolution, and a vicious killer who will stop at nothing to achieve a scandalous objective.

  8. I read a lot of mysteries, straight romance not so much. But I do love historicals. Do these have a romantic lean to them or are they straight mysteries?

Your new book sounds like it has some dark stuff to it, what age level are they suitable for? My niece loves mysteries as well.

  9. Hi to the first lovely reader who commented at 9:07 this morning! I don't know your name, but thanks so much for dropping by and leaving me a note. It makes my day to hear from all of you!!

I'm so glad you like the Sarah Woolson series. I have to admit that I love writing it! Yes, I am a screenwriter, but getting period pieces done as feature films is all but impossible, believe me, I've tried. I stand a better chance on cable TV, and I'm still working on it. I haven't come close enough to think of an actress to play the part yet, if I ever have the chance to write the screenplay.

Anyone out there have any ideas who would make a good Sarah Woolson??

Thanks again for dropping by, mysterious #1 reader. Come back again soon and tell me your name.

    Shirley

  10. Hi Virginia C, Do you happen to be real-life Sarah's sister, by any chance? Same name and last initial.

But whether you are or not, thanks so much for taking the time to drop me a line. I've been soooo busy today! So many wonderful people have been contacting me with congrats for the new book release. I'm not sure I'm not as amazing as you seem to think I am, but I'm delighted that you enjoy my website!

Good luck on getting the Sarah Woolson books you've put on your wish list! Aren't wish lists great? You should see mine!!

    Best, Shirley

  11. Hi Katie,

I love mysteries, too, which why I have so much fun writing the Sarah Woolson series. I'm already busy working on the 5th book in the series, tentatively titled: DEATH ON TELEGRAPH HILL. When I say "tentative" that's because my publisher often has other ideas about what to call my books. But just so long as they sell, I'm easy to get along with!

I know what you mean about finding time to read the books sitting by your bedside! OMG, you should see the pile next to my side of the bed! I think I mentioned in a blog the time our dog, Beau (a Vizsla) knocked the pile over with his tail. What a mess!! But do try to make time for the Sarah Woolson books. They're really good -- and naturally I'm not the least bit prejudiced!

    Best, Shirley

  13. Hi Denise,

Yes, I used to write contemporary romance novels, but stopped when I started writing TV movies for about ten years.

After a while though, I started missing writing novels, and decided to try my hand at a mystery. Thinking I was just writing it for myself, I chose the historical mystery genre, because it was my personal favorite. Well, low and behold, it sold within a week to St. Martin's Press! I must say no one was more surprised than I was.

Since mysteries are so much harder to write than romances (at least for me), I find getting one of the Sarah Woolson series out each year (while continuing to write movies with my Hollywood writing partner), is all I can manage.

But the mystery genre will always be my favorite! I just love planning all those murders and figuring out the puzzle of whodunit and when and how! Great fun!!

Thanks for writing Denise. You now have a three times higher chance of winning one of the first 3 books in the Sarah Woolson series, since I've decided to pick 3 winners today.

So keep those posts coming! I just LOVE hearing from you!!

  14. Hi Lauri Jo,

    Thanks for writing today!

I don't know yet if SCANDAL ON RINCON HILL will be a Mystery Guild selection or not. I'll post it on my website if that happens.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the book trailer. It was fun writing, but I have to give credit for putting it together to Tara Green, my online promoter. She's fantastic!!

I had to laugh when you asked what I was doing to celebrate today. As a matter of fact, I've been so busy today that I haven't even had time to eat lunch and it's almost 5 o'clock here in Eugene, Oregon! Busy, busy day!

    Thanks for posting!

  18. Hi CJ,

Thanks for dropping by today and sending in a post.

My books are whodunits set in 1880s San Francisco. The heroine -- if she were real -- would have been just the 3rd female attorney in the state of California. So you imagine the amount of prejudice she faces from women as well as men!

The books are far more straight mystery than romance. She is a very lovely young woman and men find her exceedingly attractive, but she's dedicated her life to seeing that justice is evenly distributed between women as well as men, the rich equally with the poor. There is never any explicit sex of any kind in the books.

I have avid readers as young as twelve, although I would advise reading the books yourself first to make sure it's appropriate for younger readers. I also have readers well into their nineties, men as well as women, so Sarah Woolson has a pretty broad reader fan base.

If you're one of today's 3 winners, you can try one of the books out for yourself. If you're new to the series, I would suggest starting with the first book, MURDER ON NOB HILL, although each of the books can stand alone as well.

    Good luck!

  23. Oh darn, missed a great party. Mysteries were my first love, as with many girls with the Nancy Drew Mysteries. While I read a lot of other genres now, this series sounds like a great one to rekindle my love of a fun mystery.

I wish you lots of luck with the series and the new book.
