Celebrating Linda Merlino's Fictional Tribute To Lives Lost During 9/11

All day today we're celebrating a haunting new release from Linda Merlino and Imajin Books.

ROOM OF TEARS by Linda Merlino

Out of tragedies come heroes and miracles…

At 9:59 a.m. on September 11, 2001, Diane O’Connor’s life as a firefighter’s wife changes forever shattering her faith. She writes daily of her sadness and four decades later she still keeps a note she wrote on 9/11 to her husband, Billy, hanging on her kitchen cabinet in Queens, the paper yellowed with age.

In the summer of 2041, Diane invites Friar Antonio Ortiz to her home. He is a man destined to become counsel to the first American pope—her son, Peter. Antonio asks no questions and arrives in secret, promising to wait nineteen years until Peter’s papal election before passing Diane's journal to him. Only then will Billy’s story be told, along with answers to Peter’s questions about his father’s last days.

Linda Merlino is the author of Room of Tears (July 2013), Hudson Catalina (2008 & 2012), and Swan Boat Souvenir (self-published 2003). She began writing fiction as a young mother on the sidelines of endless soccer practices. Linda wrote anytime any place. A manuscript filled a carton in the back seat of her car. The children have grown but her work continues still inspired by those early beginnings and the fulfillment of her writer’s dream.

The author has a fascination with heroes and writes her fiction to honor ordinary men and women who react unselfishly in extraordinary circumstances. She extends her gratitude to all who keep us safe and free.

Her hometown is outside of Boston. She lived for many years in New York City and more recently calls Connecticut her home.

  2. I am a writer - fiction is a passion - although I'll read just about anything including the newspaper crushed into packing boxes. My book ROOM OF TEARS began with thinking about the heroes that gave their lives in 9/11 - of the first responders who many now suffer chronic illness from their efforts during the recovery of the tragedy. I have a fascination with the true hero who gives him or her self without thoughts of the consequences. We witness such acts almost daily in the news - more tragedies - more heroes. Room of Tears honors the lives lost in 9/11, in war and in everyday accidents and murders. It reaches out to those gone forever from their loved ones, and asks questions of a higher power - rails at the same and hopefully makes us believe in miracles.
