  3. Hi everbody. Cara Bristol here. I'm excited to be here today. Intimate Submission is my first published romance.

I've always enjoyed reading and writing, even as a kid. As a teenager I started reading romances, which has continued to this day. I like books that deal with relationships. Even the non-romance books I read deal with relationship dynamics, whether it's husband and wife, parent and child, siblings or two friends.

I like my romances hot and spicy and I like to push the envelope a little. Besides, Intimate Submission, I've written a second novella for Black Velvet Seductions and I'm currently working on a longer erotic romance.

As for my personal life, I'm married, have two grown stepkids, two cats and I live north of Seattle, Washington. When I'm not writing, I enjoy playing on the computer, boating, walking on the beach, reading (of course), home decorating and traveling. I've been to Europe, China, Egypt, the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, and 35 of the 50 states.

Congrats and best of luck with your first book!! Glad we could celebrate its release with you! How long did your write seriously before being published with BVS? And what's your favorite part of being a writer? Worst part?

  6. Hi

I thought I’d start by introducing myself, I am Richard Savage, cover artist and Author with Black velvet seductions. I have been with BVS almost from the start and I find the time I spend working on BVS projects some of the happiest times I have at work. My art if anyone is interested can be found at www.swage.net and my writing is on www.blackvelvetseductions I am an erotic artist covering most topics, about 80% of my work id bought by ladies, I think that is because I tend to have a softer style to my work. My writing, well I have always been drawn to the erotic and most of my stories have an element of domination and submission, though I must stress it is all consensual. The domestic discipline story appealed to me as a subject, and was originally written as a promotional short it was only supposed to be about 2000 words. Laurie at BVS, who edits my work, has always given her writers tremendous latitude to word count, she never worried about the length of a story, what concerns her is a story well told, that the characters are well developed and is in deep point of view. Her standards are high, but I have always considered that that is a good thing from the writers point of view as it lifts our standards too. When I was writing “In the Driving Seat” we originally grew the story to about 15,000 and than edited it down to the approximately 8,500 it is now, it was quite a job cutting it down further to the required promo piece but we managed it.

  7. The subject of domestic discipline was new to me as a writer so it was interesting to explore. I had written spanking scenes for my other stories but nothing quite like this. I hope you will enjoy the excerpt.

My other writing the first story was “The Anniversary” in the crimson Z supernatural anthology, many readers have commented on the depth of emotion in it.. it came at a difficult time in my life and a lot of the feelings of loss spilled over onto the pages of the book. The next two stories came together. Temporally Yours” another supernatural story, about a couple that never had enough time together. And “The Key” a tender tale written as a valentines piece. And after “In the Driving Seat” comes my current project “The Trainer” it is the story of a man that heals damaged relationships a kind of domination and submission marriage guidance counsellor. The story is written and we are about to start edits. I hope the book will be out some time in the spring of 2010..

Ok I have waffled on enough but I will be here on and off today and into tomorrow morning if anyone has any questions.. it is always nice to hear from readers I find it interesting to get feed back, be it good or bad.. Please be kind :)

  8. Hey Ric!

Sounds like you've been busy! Congrats on the new release and good luck with the current projects. I find it interesting when men write erotica, do you write first person from the male pov or do you also write from the woman's pov and which do you find easier?

  9. I'm excited to be a part of this Launch Party today and part of Black Velvet Seductions. Trusting Her is one of my few f/m domestic discipline stories I've written. I've written many, many of the more common m/f novellas, short stories and novels. But now and then I just like to play around with something different. I hope you enjoy reading the story...and the work of the other two authors here today from BVS.

  10. I've written professionally for 30 years, first as a newspaper reporter, then as public relations manager. I've been writing fiction for 20 years. I've published some short stories in magazines and won some local/regional fiction writing awards.

The best part of writing is being able to pursue my own interests and being absorbed in the story. Just like when you read a book that you can't put down, when I'm writing a story and feeling really inspired, I would rather write than do anything else. That's the good part.

I don't know that there is a "worst" part of writing. It's all good! However, it is frustrating at times when you're uncertain which direction to take a story or you hit a block. And writing can be a lonely occupation!

  11. I've read Ric's In the Driving Seat and the excerpt from Starla's Trusting Her and enjoyed both. Starla, I'm going to have to read the rest of your story.

  12. Hi Sharon

When I am reading erotica I prefer by and large stories written by women, I like a more sensitive approach, I know this is a generalisation but erotica written by men tends to be goal obsessed, and a little formulaic. I try to put myself into the character be it male or female. So I kind of write or try to write with a male and female voice. I certainly consider it a complement when someone says I have a convincing female voice. I write third person, but I like to try to draw the reader into the character.. I hope so anyway.

    Thanks for asking

    Ric

  14. Hi, Ric and Cara
Like both of you, I've been writing professionally for around twelve years in various genres and various lengths. I actually never even read romance until I joined a local romance writers group fifteen years ago. I've written non-professionally since I was in high school. I love people, watching people, talking to people, especially observing people. And I enjoy creating characters and storylines. For me, it's so many characters and storylines, so little time. I feel very lucky that I never suffer writer's block or lack in the "what next" area.

I started out wanting to write mysteries and ended up drifitng to romances. I like happily-ever-afters, but I like my characters to struggle a bit getting there. Isn't that what life is? Struggles?

Better go for now. I'll check back. It's fun learning about my fellow authors and readers, too.

  16. hi Starla

It is always nice to hear how other writers started out.. my journey was different but there are similarities.. I am a real person watcher, I often get told of by my wife for eves dropping on others conversations. I have always worked around people I was a pro DJ back in the late 70’s and into the mid 80’s then I bought a restaurant and spent over 20 years doing that. From school I continued to paint and draw and through my time as DJ and owning the restaurant I was writing and illustrating. I was doing all kinds of things, pirate radio, children’s stories, bits of graphics.. I got into erotic art in the early 90’s and erotic writing at the same time. My erotic writing was unpublished till I got to BVS, well nothing I would publicly put my name to.. I like the erotic romance as a genre.. you are right it is life the struggle I just love writing.. I would still be torn between which I like to do more, writing or painting.. so why choose.. do both :)

  18. Just piggybacking on Starla & Ric's comments/backgrounds...an interest in people and what makes them tick seems to be a common trait among writers of all genres. Also, it helps to have a varied background. It exposes one to so many different people and things that are helpful to being a writer.

  19. Hi Richard, Cara, and Starla.

Congratulations on your new release and all 3 excerpts were amazingly tantalizing, packed with a lot of sexual tension. Really enjoyed them. I also checked out the BVS site and was thoroughly blown. Thanks to Cyber Launch I have found a new site for new authors.

Richard, I had fun browsing through your Site. Wonderful art and I especially loved "Water Baby" and "Cooling Off". Very beautiful.

  20. I agree that it helps a writer to have a varied background, which I certainly do, too. By degree, I'm a gerontologist (work with senior adults, and I have written some senior "sweet" romances) and volunteer in the community with that. I love my seniors! Such characters! By part-time career, I'm a community relations coordinator for my husband's accounting firm. By other choice, I'm a writer, a reader, a fair photographer, and a mediocre painter.

Time for me to go again, I'm going to a movie. I also love movies.

  23. Laurie Sanders here -- I'm the Laurie that has been mentioned as the one editing Ric, Cara and Starla's for BVS (Black Velvet Seductions.)

I thought I would drop by and wrap up a bit with what's going on at Black Velvet Seductions.

I'm currently in the middle of edits for Starla Kaye's next piece...a Christmas novella entitled "Holly's Big, Bad, Santa" It should be out just in time for Christmas. It's a lovely mix of sweet and sensual. It's sweet in tone...a reunion story about a man who left home and his sweetheart fifteen years before the story opens, then returns to right his wrongs. The flavor of the story is sweet, because these characters clearly love each other. But there is a lot of spice too. Holly, the heroine is a pistol. She has attitude...and Jared, the hero is more than enough to handle her. For those who enjoy spanking with their romance, there is a little bit of that in there too.

We also have several contests going on at Black Velvet Seductions.

Our main contest right now is our Pick Your Own Prize Contest. We our drawing daily winners from our newsletter subscribers and from those who post on our blog. Those daily winners are going into another pot from which we will be drawing the final winner in our Pick Your Own Prize Contest. The drawing is on February 14 and we will be awarding a prize package worth $260. The winner will be able to choose an ebook reader of their choice, ebooks, Barnes & Noble Gift Cards, Amazon Gift Cards, etc. up to a total value of $260.

We also have two ongoing drawings. We have Free Books Every Day which is a drawing from among our newsletter subscribers. We give away books or ebooks every day to someone who is subscribed to our readers newsletter.

On Saturdays we give away a free paperback book to someone who has commented on our blog.

I am planning a virtual holiday potluck for readers and authors. The idea will be for people to bring their favorite recipes to share (that's the potluck or pitch in part.) Instead of bringing a covered dish everyone will bring their favorite recipes for their favorite dishes. We'll have plenty of topics so that everyone can chat (and rack up those entries for the Pick Your Own Prize giveaway.) I am also working on some swaps...for right after Christmas that will be part of this.

Visit our blog to get in on all the fun...though it will be a day or two before I get it posted. I am BEHIND...which is a normal status for me. :-)

Hope to see you all on our blog and to draw your names soon in one of our contests. I love giving away goodies.

  25. Thanks DeNita for having us at the Cyber Launch Party Blog Today!

It's been a blast, even though I am late to the party. We had a ton of errands we had to do today...so I've been out a good share of the day. :-)

  26. Thanks Laurie. Who doesn't like freebies and BVS is certainly generous this Christmas Holiday.

One question: Does BVS publish single author anthologies and/or multiple author anthologies with a theme?

    ReplyDelete
  27. These look like a great collection of books! I'm especially intrigued by Starla's. Is this one part of a series with future relatives showing up?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hey Laurie -
The virtual potlock idea sounds great! Will you be looking for original recipes or just favorites?

I'd like to thank you for contacting AuthorIsland about the CyberLaunch and especially thank AuthorIsland for having it. It's been fun to meet the other authors and read everyone's comments.

  29. Thanks to everyone for your kind comments on my work and I hope you enjoy more than just the excerpt.

Armenia, I'm in the editing process with Laurie for a single author anthology of probably 10 stories involving one couple.

ioder, I'm not sure if you were asking about is Trusting Her part of a series with future relatives showing up...or will the holiday story (Holly's Big, Bad Santa) be part of a series. I hadn't thought about it yet for either the shorter story or the novella. But I'm always open to the possibilities, particularly if there is interest.
You might want to check out my website sometime. www.starlakayeromance.com

Thank you for joining in Cyber Launch is a great for getting our stories seen and I hope you will find a lot of interesting stories on the BVS site, I have read most of the stories in there and as a reader I have very much enjoyed the books. I did mention not being fond of male written erotica, I feel I should mention Robert Cloud, his story “A Toy’s Story” was a great read by someone with a very sensitive hand..

Thank you for having a look at my art very kind of you to comment about it.. and you mention two of my favourite pieces :)

    Thanks

  35. Also would like to eco something that Starla said.. I teach art to seniors on Mondays and Thursdays it is easy for people to just dismiss them as old people, but they are great to work with. A wealth of life experience. When I started doing art classes I was worried about the adult content on the walls of my studio.. but my seniors don’t bat an eyelid.. and why should they.. They have seen it all before.. In the restaurant I had a young kitchen assistant and he once told me old people shouldn’t have sex.. I asked him what he considered old, he said 30… it just amused me.. seniors are great fun.. hope you enjoyed the film Starla

Thanks DeNita for inviting us here to Cyber Launch Party Blog. It has been lovely being here..

Thanks for all the questions and comments
