DETOURS: A Tabor Heights, Ohio Novel from Michelle Levigne

A year in the life: Bekka, Kat and Amy share an apartment and each other's ups and downs, tragedies and dramas and dreams. Bekka doesn't envy her roommates' various romances, considering herself too busy with work, school, and writing for a relationship, but she can't help wishing when Shane shows up - to date Kat. Shane is busy with work and school and some relationship problems of his own. He can't seem to catch a break, or catch up with Bekka long enough to get to know her better. One way or another, he's going to ask her out, if she'll sit still long enough for him to ask her.

  3. Good morning, everybody!

DETOURS is my 6th Tabor Heights novel.

In fact, I'm taking a short, 10-minute break from the final polish of book #7, BEHIND THE SCENES, which is due today -- and will be released in November.

If you read THE SECOND TIME AROUND, this book happens pretty much at the same time as the long getting-back-together story of Morgan and Lynette, and intersects with their story. Kat, Bekka's roommate, is Morgan and Lynette's daughter.

DETOURS was probably the first Tabor Heights book I wrote, before I even decided to make Tabor Heights a place. I think this was one of those instances where it was a stage play and screenplay -- I was pursuing a screenwriting career at that time, along with my novels -- and eventually turned it into a book.

PLEASE, come visit my page for Tabor Heights on my web site and vote on your favorite among the cover art so far. I'll have goodies for everyone who votes -- and maybe makes suggestions for whose story they want to see next ....

  4. Hi Michelle. You are a new author to me. Your books sound really good. Do you have any say on your book covers? I see you wrote at an early age but; how or when did you decide to become an author?

  5. Hi, Sue B

Sometimes I feel like being an author chose ME.
Or as my friend Barb says, we went from being word/reading addicts to being pushers.

I started writing seriously, aiming for publication, in high school. I took creative writing classes, correspondence courses, subscribed to writing magazines, bought every writing book I could find. And started submitting to the magazines and publishers that produced what I liked to read.

So the starting date for my "serious" writing would be 10th grade. I got published in a lot of fan fiction, entered contests, and finally got paid in conjunction with the Writers of the Future Contest and the anthology of winning stories. After that, it was another 10 years before my first book got published.... *sigh*

Yes, I do have some say in my covers with most of my publishers. They ask for input, descriptions of the characters, our ideas of themes and imagery. Sometimes we get exactly what we asked for -- as in A Quiet Place -- and sometimes the artist has a much better idea -- as in Detours. And sometimes, as in other publishers who shall remain nameless, they decide that the author doesn't know anything about the story she wrote, and create covers that give the entirely wrong idea about the story.... *double sigh*

Who said the series was ending?
I just turned in BEHIND THE SCENES, my November release.
FIRESONG and FORGIVEN and WHITE ROSES are coming out in 2011, and then there's THE MISSION and ACCIDENTAL HEARTS.

And then we can start in on Year 2 of the Tabor Heights stories!!!

Hey, there's still time for you to email me at MLevigne@aol.com, and give me a vote on your favorite cover art for my Tabor Heights books. You could win a T-shirt.....
